Triple spiral pendant, mother-of-pearl

Three stacked spirals, each inlaid with mother-of-pearl in a different shade — blue, pink and amber. Fine marquetry work: every fragment of shell is cut, fitted, then polished flush with the metal.

The colours are not painted: they are the natural shades of different shells. That is why mother-of-pearl keeps its sheen where an enamel would dull.
