Square pendant, set carnelian

A carnelian cabochon of deep red, set in a silver frame edged with a twisted cord and a row of beads. The contrast between the warmth of the stone and the glint of the metal is immediate.

Carnelian is a chalcedony whose colour, from orange-red to brown, comes from iron oxides. It is one of the oldest stones in Maghreb jewellery: it has been found in Berber adornment for centuries, where it is associated with courage and vitality.

The bail is wide: the pendant hangs equally well on a heavy chain or on a leather cord.
